- Hristo Stoichkov. Autobiography
Some stories are too real to be told. Nonetheless, I have decided to try. Some adore me and others detest me. I respect that. But in any case, it’s better to be hated for who you are than loved for who you are not.
Football has created bonds for me with hundreds of superstars from all over the world. I was at the heart of the glorious Barcelona team and played an important role in that wonderful Bulgarian National Team which achieved the fourth place at the 1994 World Cup in the United States. That year, I also managed to become the top scorer of the championship and win my greatest award as a footballer: the Ballon d’Or. Likewise, with Johan Cruyff’s Dream Team I became a five-time Spanish champion and earned countless distinctions.
But who really is Stoichkov? Txiki Begiristain describes me briefly and accurately with these words: "Hristo is a person who gives everything for his friends. If needed, he will give you the keys to his house or his car and help you with whatever you need. And he only expects two things from you: to be loyal and never to betray him."
Through this book, you will learn about my incredible journey from communist Bulgaria to Barcelona and its crowded Camp Nou stadium.
Also, in this autobiography I am going to tell you some things for the first and probably last time. I trust you will appreciate it.
I have held nothing back. I have hidden nothing. This is my truth. My story.
Affectionately, Hristo Stoichkov.
